The Ups and Downs of the Market
The current state of the stock market—with declines and volatility—can make anyone a little anxious. Here's my advice to help ease your fears.

First and foremost, remember market declines are a natural part of the investment process. There have always been events that affect the markets. Yet they continue to provide returns over time.

Next, have two things nearby: a visor and a lounge chair. Go to your backyard and put on your visor and sit in your chair. Smile and look around at the beautiful flowers and magnificent trees! Ah, those flowers and trees didn't happen by accident. Each was started as a seed or small plant. When you planted them, you had a plan in mind. You knew where you wanted them to go and how long it would take to get the results you envisioned.

Now use your visor to shield your eyes from the sun's intensity. You need those same type of "blinders" to block out disheartening market news from TV, radio, newspapers, magazines, and the Internet.

Remember that you have a plan, which will take time to develop. Just like the weather with its sunshine and rain, the stock market has its good days and bad. You can reevaluate, of course. But, reevaluate against your long-term plan, not against the current, temporary situation. Rebalance what you already have and keep on course.
